May 25th Deadline for GDPR Compliance
It would have been impossible to avoid the over-abundance of press coverage, community discussion and wild speculation that has surrounded the impending deadline for compliance with the European Union's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on May 25th 2018.
Any organisation that handles visitors or customers from inside the EU is required to adhere to the GDPR, which aims to protect the personal data of EU residents, with the threat of penalties for non-compliance.
Thankfully, the extent to which the practices of most legitimate businesses and organisations will need to change has been greatly overstated by a sensationalist media looking for a story. In actual fact, most of the provisions in the GDPR are already implemented by many organisations and others simply require a tightening-up of controls and a better communication of the way that personal data is handled and retained.
XenForo 2.0.6 and 1.5.20
Sites running XenForo already have at their disposal almost all the necessary tools to comply with the GDPR, but we have taken the time to produce new versions of XenForo versions 1.5 and 2.0 with additional features designed to make compliance as easy as possible.
A full run-down of the new features and changes is available on the XenForo Community Forums, but here is a short list of highlights:
  • The ability to force all users to acknowledge and agree to your Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy at any time, and a log of when they last agreed
  • A more explicit message about cookies being required for site operation, forcing users to explicitly acknowledge their use
  • The option to opt in or out of site emails can now be shown on the registration form
  • When deleting a user, a new option allows the user's content to be anonymised
  • Users' data can now be exported to XML and imported elsewhere
  • There is a new default privacy policy help page

Third Party Software and Services
Please note that if you have third-party add-ons installed, or external services such as Amazon SES or Mailchimp integrated into your XenForo system, you will need to check with their respective developers or support services to ensure your compliance with GDPR, as these may involve communicating your users' personal data with external bodies, or processing and retaining more personal data than the base XenForo system.
